Neither side instituted, or was capable of instituting, a program to teach newly commissioned officers the intricacies of military life. This stereotype contains much truth, particularly in the first year of the war when neither North nor South had enough trained, experienced men to lead their armies. One of the most frequently found stereotypes in Civil War literature is the amateur officer - a farmer, a small-town lawyer, a grocer taken suddenly from his peaceful civilian existence and placed in command of a company or regiment of men, a civilian in uniform as devoid of military knowledge and experience as the men he commands, staying up late at night studying Hardee's Tactics in order to learn enough to drill his men the next morning. It includes organizational structure, DevOps practice, and philosophy. Generally, when you hear the term DevOps, it’s meant to encompass all elements of what makes a sustainable and efficient development environment. A futuristic, postapocalyptic narrative, Delany’s circular and heavily allusive fiction surveys the American “autumnal” city of Bellona, where some sort of disaster has taken place, altering not just the social structure but the nature of the space-time continuum. Through all these lives, it’s sold well-more than a million copies, supposedly-despite the demands it makes on readers, especially those expecting the more conventional SF that Delany published until Dhalgren’s appearance. The prolific Delany enjoys two audiences: the hard-core SF crowd and admirers of his more literary efforts, such as this humongous novel first published in 1975 as a mass market paperback, reprinted in cloth in 1977, then again by an academic press in 1996. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The character development in Starcrossed is incredible, and the connection between them all is totally believable. It’s such a fascinating subject and Angelini clearly did her homework. One of the things that captured my interest in this novel is the Greek mythology that inspired the story of Helen, Lucas and the rest of the Delos family. But really, that’s just the start of it, barely grazing the surface of the fascinating world that Josephine Angelini has created in Starcrossed. The blurb explains that, when “shy awkward Helen Hamilton meets Lucas Delos for the first time, she think two things: the first, that he is the most ridiculously beautiful boy she’s ever seen in her life the second, that she wants to kill him with her bare hands”. At first, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this book. ![]() ![]() This portrait of a fifty-two-year marriage to a woman who was the writer’s prime reader opens up Nabokov’s private life. “An absorbing story, illumined by Schiff’s flair for the succinct insight. ![]() Stacy Schiff's Véra is a triumph of the biographical form. ![]() Véra, both beautiful and brilliant, is its outsized heroine-a woman who loves as deeply and intelligently as did the great romantic heroines of Austen and Tolstoy.
